Ayurveda 101 Workshop is Coming
We are extremely grateful and thrilled to announce our Ayurveda 101 workshop with Maureen Shortt, renowned ayurvedic nutritionist. Ayurveda, “the science of life”, is considered the oldest system of health and well being. In this workshop you will learn techniques to enliven and strengthen your body/mind’s natural healing mechanisms as the means for preventing and relieving dis-ease. She will determine your body/mind type and the types of imbalances that exist in your physiology. On this basis a comprehensive Ayurvedic program will be set up that allows you to incorporate the recommendations into your lifestyle.
As a student of Ayurveda for 20 years I have found it to be the most fascinating and important information I have learned not only for my own health and well being, but to understand my loved ones and the people I interact with daily. Not only is Maureen a brilliant educator and counselor, but she makes this amazing science easily understood and the process entertaining. Date: March 19th Time: 12:30-5pm Place: Blue Moon Dance Studio, Bonita Springs Cost: $125 for pre-registration by Mar. 1st, $140 after Mar 1st. All reservations must be made by March 15th. Private consultations; $150 (1 hour) Wear comfortable clothing. The workshop will begin with a 30 minute gentle yoga class followed by lunch and the workshop. Space is limited so please register early. All printed reference material and a delicious Indian Food lunch are included in the price. (Maureen will be available for individual consultations by appointment only on the Saturday, March 18th and Monday the 20th, for $150/hr. If you have specific health challenges I recommend you meet with her privately.)
The DVD is on its way
We can hear the UPS delivery van coming to us as we type. The promised DVD will be available and in our possession no later than the 10th of Feb. (Fingers still crossed). You can buy it on our website or in class. In a few days, an audio/visual clip from the DVD will be on the website for your viewing pleasure.
If it Hurts, It Is Not Yoga
In reviewing all the comments, there was one that stuck out in our minds that needed to be explained. It was suggested that the classes could be “harder”, that they needed more of a “workout”. Needless to say (but here I go saying it anyway), the intensity of the asana is something that is regulated internally. In my 33+ years of practice and instruction I have found that individuals who need to “suffer” in yoga are precisely the ones who could use some stillness and systematic, intentional relaxation and observation of the body. The Joyful Yoga Flow is a class appropriate for beginners and seasoned practitioners. It has been specifically designed to foster health, strength, and balance with little risk of injury. We have attended far too many classes (and heard about a multitude more) where, with no warm-up we were contorting our bodies into very advanced poses, sometimes being pushed into them, as instructors, we were shocked that beginners were not given guidance and risked injury. Imagining the first-time student in this situation hurts our hearts. (No wonder so many try yoga and never return!). The Joyful Yoga Flow was designed with the “Baby Boomers” in mind, but still suitable for those who want to boost their heart rate, without impact, speed up their metabolism in a kind and nurturing way, without causing pain or injury to the body. It is up to you how intense you create the sensations in each pose. Keep in mind, the first guideline in Yoga is Ahimsa, which means non- violence, honor your body where it is and you will find it will take you deeper into poses when it is ready, as you allow the breath to guide you, without force or pain. If it hurts, it is not Yoga.

Your Pranayama (Breathing) Technique for February
Heart Breathing This is a technique that will open your heart and renew you. Sit comfortably. Close your eyes. Notice your breath, but don’t try to control it. Feel your chest expanding and contracting. Now imagine the breath flowing out of your heart with each exhalation and pouring into your heart with each inhalation. Don’t think about anything but your heart and breath. Feel the sensations. Imagine the breath is pure love. Do this for 5 to 10 minutes. Enjoy the feeling. Remember it throughout your day.
