Ayurveda is a holistic
system of health from the Sanskrit word
meaning knowledge of life. It is the meeting
point between the mind and the body, where
thought turns to matter; it is occupied
by three operating principles called doshas.
The three doshas are Vata, Pitta, and
Kapha, which regulate the thousands of
separate functions in the mind/body system.
The three basic functions are:
Vata
dosha controls movement
Pitta
dosha controls metabolism
Kapha
dosha controls structure
Every cell in your body
must contain all of these principles.
Just as there are three doshas, there
are three basic constitutions in the Ayurvedic
system, depending upon which of the doshas
is dominant. Discovering your body type
can be tremendously helpful in balancing
your specific constitution to allow optimum
health. As you become familiar with this
science you will understand what your
body needs as it pertains to diet, exercise,
daily routine, and other measures for
prevention of disease. As you complete

type, it will become obvious to you that
all three doshas are present in everyone,
and all three need to be kept in balance.
The knowledge of body type that you will
gain is your key to total balance; it
provides the all-important ingredient
for change seeing yourself as nature made
you.
